Abstract
Timber construction in conjunction with digital technologies has emerged as an exciting field of possibilities that goes far beyond its rural and regional roots. Linking expert knowledge in digital technologies with nature and culture, the lecture presents a series of paradigmatic projects at the intersection of research and practice, investigating how traditional building methods and advanced technologies can contribute to an ecological architecture of novel beauty.

Bio:
Hannes Mayer is an architect and artist bridging between research and practice with a focus on digital technologies and ecological transformations in architecture. Between 2016 and 2022 he directed Gramazio Kohler Research, a world-leading laboratory for robotics in architecture at ETH Zurich, before starting his own practice Studio Hannes Mayer in Munich, Germany. He has realised large-scale installations for the Centre Pompidou, Swiss Institute, V&A Dundee, Venice Biennale and Aichi Triennale 2022, which formed the starting point of his ongoing collaboration with the choreographer Kenta Kojiri.
Hannes Mayer was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. He was an artist-in-residence at Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa Kyoto, the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, Koganecho KAMC in Yokohama and is a recent Creation & Transition grant laureate of the Fondation d’entreprise Martell in France.
