We research the future of architecture and cities from the perspective of architectural informatics, which co-evolves the creation, construction, and experience of artificial environments in the digital information society.

Research Theme
Architectural informatics

The evolution and permeation of information technology in contemporary society has had a fundamental impact not only on the way we experience, create, and construct artificial environments, but also on their value and even meaning.
Architectural Informatics sees the evolutionary potential of “architecture as an information medium” in the following aspects

Computational design: Optimization and value creation through simulation and automatic generation using high-speed computing power
Digital Construction: Production methods and collaborative relationship between humans and machines through automatic control technology and data linkage
Common Ground Information: Open and interactive sharing of environmental information based on digital models
Cyber-physical systems: construction of adaptive environments through sensing and interaction of social dynamics and human behavior

Based on these perspectives, we research innovative architectural and urban design and its implementation methods through practical projects.
(The following projects were conducted at the Yasushi Ikeda Laboratory at Keio University SFC)

Digital woodworking through data linkage

This is a project to develop a digital support environment for crafting based on the non-homogeneous nature of wood. While referring to traditional woodworking methods, we aim to pass on sustainable and advanced woodworking to the future through scanning and automatic recognition of individual objects, accumulation of historical data starting from harvesting, and navigation presentation of processing information based on the analysis.

3D-printing building construction method

This project is an attempt to develop an integrated technology for architectural functions, building materials, and production methods, based on the premise of a 3D printer technology using a stacking method with a robotic arm. The project aims to explore a design method that cross-examines the parameters of different viewpoints by dynamically linking model data.

Collective Urbanism with organized Location data

This project is developing a cyber-physical system for fostering a sense of shared participation among local residents, as in a community development workshop, as a game application that uses GPS location information.
This consensus-building system, which reflects the collective will of humans, aims to make spontaneous, democratic, and rational use of rapidly developing urban activity data.

Digital Handcraft Support

This project will devise a digital design and craft support method to enable the handcrafting of complex interior structures with relatively simple tools and methods. The experimental display shelves will be realized as an extension of the personal craft by considering everything from the creation of an automated machine to the construction and design of the joints of the components.

Discrete crowd Behavior in Architectural space

This project seeks to analyze the complex and discrete behavior of crowds in freely trafficked urban public spaces in relation to their spatial geometry. It aims to refine behavioral simulations with dynamic visual information models using automatic recognition data from surveillance camera images, and to apply them to spatial design.

Augmented reality to support wood construction

This project aims to support the construction of more complex configurations by presenting information using augmented reality to assist in the construction of typical wooden structures that use hardware for joints. The project aims to be used practically with benefits such as preventing mistakes when installing components and finding safe and efficient construction plans.
