Information of Entrance Examination for Graduate School (Department of Architecture)

(22nd Jan.) The second examination of the doctoral program will be held online via Zoom on January 25-26, 2021. Applicants are required to present their master’s thesis, etc. (master’s thesis or a research paper that can be substituted for it, etc.) using PowerPoint or other application by screen-sharing of Zoom. Each student will have 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for questions, for a total of 20 minutes.
(8th December) Second examination for the doctoral program (All applicants wishing to enroll from April 2021): Submit applicant’s master’s thesis, or research papers as a substitute for their master’s thesis in PDF format to the Office of the Department of Architecture (office(at)arch1.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp) by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2021. Those who expect to graduate from the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, will be required to follow the instructions for the Master thesis submission and not by mail submission (the details will be announced through the Portal Site of the Department of Architecture).
(8th December) Although the 2021 Guide to the Doctoral Program Entrance Examination has following note (p.3): “*1 Applicant, who have not completed or are not expected to complete the master’s degree from the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, are required to provide approximately 20 copies of their master’s thesis summary which will be made available to the attendees at the presentation. The summary must be written in either Japanese or in English with no limit to the number of pages”, due to the online examination, there is no need to distribute the 20 copies of their master’s thesis summary.
(8th December) Second examination for the doctoral program will be conducted online. Details of the examination will be notified through the email.
(14th August) “Online Oral Examination Rules for Examinee” was uploaded. Please read carefully and prepare according to this.
(8th August) For applicants who wish to enroll from September 2020 but do not expect to complete their master’s degree course of the Department of Architecture, the University of Tokyo in September 2020, the second examination for the doctoral program will be conducted online by Zoom on 27th August, 2020 (9 AM to 12 AM Japan time). Applicants are requested to make a presentation of their master’s thesis using PowerPoint or similar applications using screen sharing. If master’s thesis is not available, research papers, academic projects, or scholarly work may be presented. Each examinee has 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion, 20 minutes in total.
(8th August) The first examination (oral examination) for the doctoral program will be conducted online by Zoom on 27th, August, 2020 (1 PM to 6 PM, Japan time).
(6th August) Connection check for the oral examination (online by Zoom) is scheduled on 20th (Thr) and 21st (Fri) August. The outline of the oral examination and the connection check is due to be posted on this website by 14th August. The details of the oral examination and the connection check will be notified to those who have passed the document screening, after 19th August.
(3rd August) Except for missing international envelope to the office of the Department of Architecture, we can not answer to any questions concerning the both electrical and physical postal arrival situation and the contents received.
(21st July) Reflecting the spread of COVID-19, the oral examination will be conducted online. Details of the examination will be notified in this website.
(17th July) When you mail your submissions for the Department of Architecture, do not forget to include your name and address on the envelope.
(5th July) Second Examination for applicants who wish to enroll from September 2020: Submit applicant’s master’s thesis, or research papers as a substitute for their master’s thesis in PDF format to the Office of the Department of Architecture (office(at)arch1.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp) by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020.

(27th May) The briefing of entrance exam will not be held this year. The introduction of the laboratories will be uploaded on this website around June 11th.

(12th May) The Department of Architecture will not impose TOEFL, this year only.

To those who are considering to take the entrance examination of the Department of Architecture,

Due to the pandemic of the coronavirus infection disease we understand that many of you are anxious of the execution of the entrance examination to the Graduate School scheduled on 24th to 28th of August, 2020. The Department of Architecture of the University of Tokyo value the safety and health of the members and examinees above all. Based on this common understanding, we are giving serious consideration to the method of evaluating the knowledge and ability of the examinees.
The information on entrance examination to the Department of Architecture will be announced and updated on this Web site. Please be careful to gain your information.
